Spike in Vehicle Thefts on Ansongo-Gao Road: Rising Security Risks
Gao, December 20, 2025 - Armed groups have reportedly stolen multiple vehicles along the Ansongo-Gao road, with eight incidents recorded since late November, including the theft of an ambulance on December 17. Authorities have urged travelers to exercise heightened caution, underscoring the need for improved road security in northern Mali.
On a positive note, accelerated joint patrols under the Economic Support Agency (AES) could help curb such criminal activity. However, analysts warn that without investment in infrastructure and sustained security measures, these incidents are likely to continue, hindering humanitarian access and exacerbating the vulnerability of local communities.
