Walikale Villages Empty As Fighting Spreads In Eastern DRC
Goma, August 31, 2026 - Multiple villages in the Waloa Loanda groupement of Walikale were emptied as fighting between the army and AFC/M23 forces spread from nearby Masisi and Kalehe zones, deepening humanitarian pressure in North Kivu.
Residents fled toward areas they perceived as safer, adding to displacement in a region already strained by conflict and limited relief access. The movement reflects how clashes in one zone can quickly destabilize neighboring territories.
For policymakers and investors, the displacement reinforces the operational risks tied to insecurity in eastern DRC, including disruption to transport, local markets and humanitarian supply chains.
