DRC And Congo-Brazzaville Move To De-Escalate Congo River Border Clash
Kinshasa, August 31, 2026 - The DRC and Congo-Brazzaville moved to contain tensions after a fatal August 28 clash between FARDC troops and Congo-Brazzaville forces on the Congo River between Yumbi and Makotimpoko.
Kinshasa expressed regret over the incident and returned two Congolese soldiers. Both capitals urged restraint while an investigation proceeds into the circumstances of the confrontation.
The incident highlights the sensitivity of riverine border security between the neighboring states. A rapid de-escalation limits the risk of a diplomatic rupture along a strategic corridor for communities and cross-border movement.
