Socio-Economic Activities Paralyzed by General Strike

Butembo, January 13, 2026 - Socio-economic activities were largely paralyzed in Butembo, North Kivu, following a general strike called by a coalition of citizen movements and pressure groups to denounce persistent insecurity in the city.

From early morning, tensions were reported in the northern districts, particularly in Furu, where tires were burned and barricades were erected, disrupting traffic. Along Boulevard Président de la République, most shops remained closed, and banks suspended operations, serving only a limited number of clients.

Schools and universities were also closed, with no students in attendance. Many parents kept their children at home due to fears of unrest. Only a few students who went to school were later sent back.

In some peripheral neighborhoods, including Rughenda, Mutiri, Vuhira, and Katwa, activities continued at a reduced pace, despite the strike call.

Organizers said the protest aims to demand the removal of the mayor of Butembo, the reinstatement of the police commissioner, the relocation of Wazalendo positions in and around the city, and the opening of independent investigations to ensure justice for victims of insecurity.

They cited ongoing assassinations, armed robberies, home burglaries, and human rights violations, accusing local authorities of ineffectiveness. Protesters also called for stronger measures to remove armed and untrained individuals from the city.

The strike comes amid a deteriorating security situation. In recent days, two civilians and a police officer were killed in separate incidents. Although authorities have announced a ban on armed Wazalendo in the city, critics say the measure has had little impact, as these groups remain present and view themselves as allies of the army.
