Persistent Insecurity Escalates
Kinshasa, January 24, 2026 - Kibua, Walikale, January 17, 2026 - The security situation remains precarious in Kibua and its surroundings, in the Ihana group (Walikale territory), North Kivu, with several serious incidents reported on Thursday, January 15.
According to the head of the Ihana group, Mwami Kitwana Ngulu Séraphin, the first incident involved a member of the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) who was shot in the left foot. The exact circumstances are unclear, but local sources suggest it occurred following a heated argument with superiors.
Later the same day, another FARDC soldier stabbed a young boy in the hand and attempted to shoot him moments later, sparking outrage and fear among residents already traumatized by the recurring insecurity in the region.
The situation worsened further with the intervention of a militiaman from the NDC-Renovated armed group, who carried out armed robberies on Kalonge/Mubea Hill. Vehicles, particularly motorcycle taxis, were looted, temporarily paralyzing traffic and intensifying the sense of insecurity among road users.
In response to this resurgence of violence, Mwami Kitwana Ngulu Séraphin called on military and administrative authorities to take urgent measures to restore order and protect the civilian population.
Meanwhile, the residents of Kibua continue to live in constant fear, urging the State to strengthen discipline within the regular forces and the wazalendo operating in this volatile part of North Kivu.
