Over 200 suspects arrested in large security sweep at Lubumbashi military camp
Lubumbashi March 30, 2026 - Security forces in southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo arrested more than 200 suspected criminals during a large-scale cordon-and-search operation at Major Vangu Camp in Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga province. The joint operation was conducted under the supervision of provincial Interior Minister Jean-Jacques Kashiba and the provincial police commissioner, Blaise Kilimbalimba. It involved units of the National Police, supported by elements of the 22nd Military Region and other security services. Authorities reported the seizure of 19 AK-47 rifles, along with ammunition, military uniforms, and various bladed weapons including machetes, crowbars, hammers, and shears. Security forces also recovered items such as alcoholic beverages and narcotics during the searches. Police spokesperson Major Charles Bin Lwamba stated that those arrested included civilians, soldiers, and women, describing the group as suspected of involvement in criminal activity within and around the camp area. The operation involved systematic searches of residential homes, shops, informal markets, and other structures inside and outside the camp perimeter, according to security officials. The sweep followed a recent military gathering at Major Vangu Camp where the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lt. Gen. Jules Banza Mwilambwe, called for stronger unity and discipline within the ranks to reinforce national security and territorial integrity.
