Niger Postpones Academic Year Amid Climate and Infrastructure Challenges

Niamey, October 5, 2025 - The Nigerien government has officially delayed the start of the 2025-2026 school year from October 1 to October 15, affecting nearly 3 million students across primary, secondary, and vocational institutions.

Officials cited persistent challenges stemming from prolonged rains, which left roads flooded and school facilities inaccessible, particularly in Tillabéri, Dosso, and Maradi regions. Many schools remain vulnerable to weather disruptions, exposing gaps in climate-resilient infrastructure. Nationwide logistical constraints, including delays in textbook distribution and teacher assignments, further compounded the disruption.

This marks the second consecutive year of significant educational interruptions, raising concerns about cumulative learning loss and widening inequities, particularly for rural and nomadic populations.

In response, the government has deployed mobile learning units and supplementary teaching programs to mitigate learning loss. Infrastructure projects are being accelerated to climate-proof schools with rain-resistant classrooms and improved transportation access. Niger is also collaborating with international partners, including UNESCO and UNICEF, to strengthen teacher training and expand digital learning initiatives.
