New Political Alliance Launched in Khartoum to Advocate Civilian Rule

Khartoum, February 18, 2026 - A new political coalition has been formed in Khartoum, marking the first such initiative in the capital since the outbreak of war in April 2023.

The alliance, named the Revolutionary Forces for National Issues, brings together several political groups and movements, including factions of established parties and youth organizations. Its founding platform calls for national reconciliation, the establishment of a civilian-led government, and the disarmament of all militias.

Among its key objectives is the removal of the military from political life and the restoration of a constitutional system, alongside the creation of a legislative council to guide the transition.

A senior figure within the coalition said the initiative aims to present an inclusive vision that addresses the needs of all segments of Sudanese society. The alliance is also advocating for a national constitutional conference to oversee the transition process and safeguard sovereignty from external interference.

The coalition expressed strong opposition to armed groups, including the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and other militias operating alongside government forces. It called for their dissolution and disarmament, emphasizing the need for a unified national army with exclusive control over the use of force.

The group also highlighted the importance of justice and accountability, proposing transitional justice mechanisms that include compensation for victims, reparations, and institutional reforms to address past violations.

Some political parties involved in the drafting process have yet to formally endorse the alliance, pending internal consultations.

Structurally, the coalition will operate through a leadership body, a general secretariat, and a supreme coordination council, which is expected to include representatives from civil society, youth and women’s groups, professional sectors, and religious organizations.

The alliance underscored that regional and international actors should play a limited role, focusing on facilitating dialogue rather than directing outcomes.

It also confirmed plans to engage with the “Quintuple Mechanism,” a diplomatic framework involving the African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the United Nations, the Arab League, and the European Union, which is working to support political dialogue and help resolve Sudan’s ongoing crisis.
