FARDC and Wazalendo Block Key Bukavu-Uvira Road in South Kivu

South Kivu, March 16, 2026 - The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), in coordination with Wazalendo armed groups, have closed the RN5 road linking Bukavu and Uvira, disrupting transport and trade in the region.

The RN5 corridor, a vital route for movement of people and goods, connects communities in the Ruzizi Plain and Uvira territory. The closure has left traders and travelers stranded, raising concerns over the economic and humanitarian impact.

On the morning of 15 March 2026, traders traveling from Runingu to Sange were turned back by security forces. Reports indicate that passengers heading from Bukavu toward Uvira and the Ruzizi Valley were blocked and forced to gather at Sange, awaiting further instructions.

After hours of uncertainty, authorities informed residents that no vehicles, motorcycles, or pedestrians would be allowed to access Uvira from areas under the control of the AFC/M23 coalition.

Security Justification, Public Frustration

Officials say the decision was taken to maintain security in zones under government and allied control. However, many residents have expressed confusion and frustration, arguing that authorities should instead strengthen protection measures while allowing economic activities to continue.

The RN5 road had briefly resumed operations between December 2025 and January 2026, during a period when AFC/M23 forces controlled parts of the Ruzizi Plain and Uvira. Since their withdrawal in mid-January, traffic has significantly declined, with travelers forced to navigate areas controlled by opposing factions.

The latest closure highlights the ongoing instability in eastern DRC, where shifting control between armed groups continues to disrupt daily life, trade, and mobility for local populations.
