DRC World Cup Qualification Fuels Tshisekedi’s Renewed Push to Reclaim Eastern

Kinshasa, April 6, 2026 - President Félix Tshisekedi has expressed renewed optimism about retaking territories held by the AFC/M23 in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, linking his confidence to a wave of national unity sparked by the country’s recent World Cup qualification.

The Congolese national football team secured its place in the tournament on 31 March with a narrow 1-0 victory over Jamaica national football team, marking the country’s first qualification in 52 years. Celebrations erupted nationwide, including in conflict-affected areas such as Goma, where residents joined in festivities despite ongoing control by rebel forces.

Speaking on 5 April during a ceremony in Kinshasa honoring the national team, Tshisekedi pointed to the celebrations in the east as a sign of enduring national cohesion. “You have seen the images. In these areas controlled by the enemy there is joy, and we will soon take them back because of this strength, because of this pride,” he said.

The president’s remarks come amid continued tensions with the AFC/M23, which maintains control over parts of North and South Kivu provinces. The group has rejected any suggestion of withdrawal, warning that it would respond forcefully to any military offensive.

Previous attempts by government forces to retake lost territories have largely been unsuccessful, with the AFC/M23 often managing to repel advances and, in some cases, expand its positions. International observers continue to emphasize the need for a political solution to the conflict.

Peace talks between Kinshasa and the AFC/M23 are expected to resume later this month, with discussions set to take place in Switzerland after being relocated from Doha.

Despite these developments, both sides appear to be moving cautiously, raising concerns that without tangible political progress, hostilities could reignite and intensify in the coming weeks.
