DRC Government Condemns Goma Demonstration, Accuses AFC/M23 of Coercion

Kinshasa -, December 22, 2025 - The Congolese government has strongly condemned the massive demonstration in Goma earlier on Monday, accusing the AFC/M23 rebel coalition of forcing civilians to march under coercion and threats of violence.

In an official statement, Patrick Muyaya, government spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Media, described the protest as a staged mobilization designed to conceal abuses perpetrated in territories under rebel control.

Muyaya alleged that civilians who refused to participate were subjected to whippings, forced labor, and other forms of intimidation, emphasizing that such methods highlight the lack of genuine popular support for the armed group.

“Forcing victims to take part in a demonstration organized by their oppressors will not change the infamous and internationally recognized image of torture and crime associated with the father, Rwanda, and the son, the M23,” Muyaya said.

He added that attempts to gain compliance through coercion demonstrate the unpopularity of the armed group and the illegitimacy of its authority in occupied areas.

The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable:

“No support is ever gained through coercion. This persistence in evil clearly demonstrates the total unpopularity of those who govern through crime. Whips and intimidation will never extinguish the flame of resistance and patriotism burning in the hearts of our compatriots.”

The condemnation comes amid heightened security and humanitarian concerns in North and South Kivu, following mass demonstrations in Goma and renewed clashes around Uvira. Analysts warn that continued violence, forced mobilizations, and coercive practices risk further destabilizing the region and exacerbating civilian suffering.
