Dr. Iyamuremye Criticizes Support for Sanctions Against Rwanda

Kigali, March 18, 2026 - Former Senate President Augustin Iyamuremye has criticized Rwandans who express support for international sanctions against their own country, warning of the broader impact on ordinary citizens.

Speaking on 18 March, Iyamuremye said he could not understand why some Rwandans-particularly those living abroad-appear to welcome measures such as the suspension of foreign aid and other restrictions.

His remarks come amid strained relations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which have prompted some international partners, including the United Kingdom and Canada, to suspend parts of their cooperation with Kigali.

Earlier in March 2026, the United States also imposed sanctions on members of the Rwandan Armed Forces, further intensifying the debate.

Iyamuremye argued that such measures primarily affect citizens rather than political leaders, citing potential disruptions to essential services and development projects.

“I cannot understand how a Rwandan could be happy that their country is being sanctioned,” he said. “These are services meant for citizens-roads, water, electricity and health facilities.”

He added that those who support such measures fail to distinguish between the government and the broader population, emphasizing the need for national cohesion during challenging times.

The comments highlight ongoing divisions among Rwandans regarding the impact and legitimacy of external pressure linked to regional security tensions.
