Butembo, February 2, 2026 - A passenger convoy traveling from Rutshuru territory to the city of Butembo was targeted in an armed attack on Sunday, February 1, along the Rwindi-Kanyabayonga road. According to local sources, the incident occurred around 3:00 PM, when several vehicles and motorcycles were ambushed by unidentified armed men in an area under AFC/M23 rebel control. The attackers opened fire and used bladed weapons against the passengers, causing several injuries, though no fatalities were reported. Victims were transported to medical facilities in Kanyabayonga for treatment. In addition to the physical assault, all passengers’ valuables were looted, including money, cell phones, and merchandise, leaving many stripped of personal belongings. Civil society actors in Rutshuru noted that such incidents are becoming increasingly frequent on this strategic route. They called on the authorities and security forces to strengthen protection, secure the road, and ensure the free movement of people and goods. This attack highlights the persistent insecurity in parts of North Kivu, despite repeated warnings and calls for urgent intervention to safeguard civilians.
