Wazalendo Recapture Three Villages Near Rubaya After AFC/M23 Clashes

Masisi, North Kivu, February 23, 2026 - Violent fighting erupted on Sunday, February 22, between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters in the villages of Kasenyi, Chugi, and Kinigi, located in the Bahunde chiefdom of Masisi territory, near the mining town of Rubaya. The Wazalendo successfully regained control of the three villages, which had been considered strategic positions for the AFC/M23 rebels due to the economic and security significance of the area. The proximity to Rubaya, known for its mining activities, underscores the importance of these localities in the military strategy of the warring parties. During the clashes, several rebel fighters were reportedly captured, and weapons and ammunition were recovered by the Wazalendo. In response, the AFC/M23 reinforced their positions on the Sita hill, aiming to contain the advance and attempt to retake Chugi and Kinigi. The AFC/M23 denounced the government coalition’s violation of the ceasefire and reported drone strikes in several areas of the Masisi territory. On Monday, February 23, a fragile calm prevailed along the front line, but the situation remains volatile, with residents fearing a resumption of fighting in a region already weakened by months of insecurity.
