Wazalendo Offensive Forces AFC/M23 Rebels Out of Three Villages Near Rubaya

Masisi, March 8, 2026 - MASISI, North Kivu February 23, 2026 - Violent clashes erupted in Masisi territory after Wazalendo fighters launched an offensive against AFC/M23 rebel positions, resulting in the loss of three villages previously controlled by the rebels near the strategic mining town of Rubaya.

The fighting took place on Sunday, February 22, in the villages of Kasenyi, Chugi, and Kinigi, located in the Bahunde chiefdom. These localities are considered strategically important due to their proximity to Rubaya, an area widely known for its intensive mining activities and its significance in the military and economic dynamics of the region.

After intense exchanges of gunfire, Wazalendo fighters reportedly regained control of the three villages, which had previously served as key positions for AFC/M23 forces in this part of North Kivu. During the clashes, several rebel fighters were reportedly captured, while weapons and ammunition were seized by the Wazalendo.

In response to the loss of these positions, AFC/M23 elements reinforced their presence on the hill known as “Sita,” a strategic location overlooking the contested area. The reinforcements appear aimed at stopping the Wazalendo advance and potentially launching a counteroffensive to retake Chugi and Kinigi.

Amid the escalation, AFC/M23 representatives accused the government coalition of violating the ceasefire, while also reporting drone strikes in several areas of Masisi territory, further highlighting the fragile security environment in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Monday, February 23, a fragile calm prevailed along the front line, but the situation remains volatile. Residents in the surrounding villages continue to live in uncertainty and fear, as tensions remain high in Masisi territory, an area already deeply affected by months of armed conflict and insecurity.
