Wazalendo Factions Clash In Walikale, Forcing Residents To Flee
Walikale, August 17, 2026 - Rival Wazalendo factions fought in Iteya, in Walikale territory, forcing residents to flee into nearby forests and underscoring the fragility of local security arrangements in eastern DRC.
The clashes took place in the Kisimba groupement between the CMC/FAPC faction led by Bigabo and Sindondori Wazalendo elements. The dispute centered on control over local entity management.
Gunfire lasted for several hours, and the human toll was not immediately established. Local civil society actors called for de-escalation in an area already exposed to armed group activity.
The fighting highlights the risks created by fragmented pro-government militia networks, particularly where local authority, taxation and security control overlap.
