Washington Warns of Sanctions to Ensure DRC-Rwanda Peace Accord Compliance

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min readFrançais

Kinshasa - December 15, 2025 - The United States has signaled potential sanctions to ensure adherence to the Washington Peace Agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.

US Ambassador to Kinshasa, Lucy Tamlyn, condemned renewed violence in eastern DRC, particularly the capture of Uvira by the AFC/M23 rebels, and stressed Rwanda’s responsibility in implementing the accord. She emphasized the US commitment to supporting peace in the DRC and offered a message of hope to the Congolese population.

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, warning that the escalation could undermine peace efforts and increase the risk of regional conflict.
