Violent Clashes Erupt Between AFC/M23 and Wazalendo in Kanune

Walikale, March 22, 2026 - Violent clashes broke out early Sunday in the village of Kanune, in the Ikobo area, between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters.

Hostilities began around 5:00 AM, when the Wazalendo launched an offensive on rebel positions. Since then, sustained heavy and light weapons fire has gripped the area, spreading fear among residents.

The civilian population remains confined indoors, fearing stray bullets and the intensity of the fighting. No official information has yet been released regarding casualties or damage.

The Ikobo area, under AFC/M23 control for nearly a year, has seen a volatile security situation, with recent reinforcements reported in nearby localities, particularly toward Kisimba. Analysts suggest these movements may have weakened some rebel positions, prompting the current Wazalendo attempt to retake the territory.
