Violent Clashes Between AFC/M23 and FARDC in Chanjikiro
Walikale North Kivu, January 30, 2026 - Violent fighting erupted on Thursday, January 29, 2026, between AFC/M23 rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by the Wazalendo and the Armed Reserve of the Defense (RAD), in Chanjikiro, within the Kisimba group of Walikale territory, North Kivu province. According to local administrative authorities, the attackers advanced from Mpety and launched an offensive against government positions at around 2:00 p.m. local time. Heavy and light weapon fire was reported, with loud explosions heard across the area, triggering widespread panic among civilians. After nearly two hours of fighting, FARDC forces and their allies repelled the assault, forcing the rebels to retreat toward Mpety in the Banakindi area. Local sources in Kisimba report a mass displacement of residents into surrounding bush areas, where civilians are now exposed to harsh weather conditions and heightened vulnerability. The security situation remains tense in this part of Walikale, which has faced persistent insecurity for several months, further deepening the humanitarian crisis.
