Violence Escalates in Ménaka as IS-Sahel Claims Deadly Attack on Malian Forces

Ménaka, April 2, 2026 - Armed violence intensified in northeastern Mali after the Islamic State in the Sahel claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on Malian military positions in and around the town of Ménaka.

According to statements attributed to the group, the assault took place on March 27, 2026, targeting an exit route toward Andéramboukane. The group claimed it killed two Malian soldiers, burned two military vehicles, and seized weapons and ammunition, including a heavy machine gun and Kalashnikov rifles.

The group also reported a separate clash at the entrance to Ménaka, during which one of its fighters was killed, while Malian forces and allied units allegedly suffered additional casualties and equipment losses.

Local sources cited in the report indicated that the fighting also had a civilian toll, with four people reportedly killed by stray bullets, including women and children, as hostilities unfolded in the area.

The claims could not be independently verified, and the Malian authorities had not issued an immediate official statement at the time of reporting.

The incident highlights the continuing insecurity in Mali’s northern regions, where armed groups remain active despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
