US Senate Urges DRC Forces to Halt Attacks, Return to Negotiating Table

Kigali, March 8, 2026 - The United States Senate has called on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) forces to cease attacks on AFC/M23 positions in North and South Kivu provinces, emphasizing the need for a return to peace negotiations. The statement was made on March 4, 2026, by Senator Jim Risch, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Senator Risch highlighted that the Washington peace agreement signed between Rwanda and the DRC with US support offers a path to lasting peace and regional development if fully implemented.

“The DRC government and FARDC must stop pursuing a military solution in eastern DRC, respect the ceasefire, and work with partners, including the United States, to build a lasting solution to the security situation in the east of the country,” Risch said.

While AFC/M23 forces are expected to halt the expansion of their positions, the senator stressed that the FARDC and its allies, including Burundian troops, Wazalendo, mercenaries, and the FDLR, must also refrain from military actions and adhere to the ceasefire.

Despite a ceasefire agreement signed in Doha, Qatar, and the establishment of a monitoring mechanism, attacks by the DRC forces continue. AFC/M23 expressed regret that mediators remain silent while its fighters defend themselves and civilians in North and South Kivu, asserting that bias and misinformation persist in statements condemning the group.

On March 2, 2026, AFC/M23 announced it would continue defending its positions and protecting civilians while calling for renewed dialogue and compliance with the ceasefire.
