United States Lifts Sanctions on Malian Officers, Ambassador Informs Prime Minister
Bamako, March 2, 2026 - The United States has lifted sanctions imposed on several Malian military officers, a move formally conveyed to Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga during a meeting with the U.S. ambassador in Bamako on Monday. During the audience, U.S. Ambassador Rachna Korkonen informed the head of government of Washington’s decision to remove the sanctions targeting members of the Malian armed forces. Responding on behalf of Mali’s transitional president General Assimi Goïta, Maïga welcomed the decision and expressed the authorities’ appreciation for the measure. According to the prime minister, the lifting of sanctions could contribute to improving diplomatic relations between Bamako and Washington. Maïga also reiterated Mali’s commitment to maintaining constructive relations with international partners while emphasizing the country’s respect for national sovereignty. The decision marks a potential easing of tensions between Mali’s transitional authorities and the United States, which had previously imposed restrictions following political and security developments in the country.
