UN Warns Of Worsening Security And Ebola Risks At Ituri Displacement Site
Bunia, August 13, 2026 - The humanitarian situation is deteriorating at the Plaine Savo displacement site in Djugu territory, Ituri province, where civilians face persistent armed violence and the added risk of the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.
UN humanitarian officials urged parties to the conflict, national and provincial authorities, and technical and financial partners to take urgent measures to protect displaced people. Civilians at the site remain exposed to clashes and attacks in and around Bule locality.
Humanitarian protection assessments cite rising violations around the site since the start of the year, including arbitrary arrests, abductions, extrajudicial killings and rape. Local civil society sources reported that at least 23 displaced people were killed in and around Plaine Savo between January and June 2026, with more than 54 others seriously injured.
Although one party to the conflict announced a ceasefire in mid-May, the area remains highly volatile. Insecurity has restricted civilian movement and access to fields, markets and essential services, while the Ebola outbreak declared in Ituri in mid-May adds pressure on health access and humanitarian operations.
