UN Sudan Envoy Travels to Chad to Address Regional Impact of War

UNITED NATIONS, July 8, 2026 - The United Nations’ envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, has begun a diplomatic mission to neighbouring Chad to assess the regional consequences of Sudan’s ongoing conflict and seek ways to reduce tensions.

During the visit, Haavisto is holding discussions with Chadian authorities and diplomatic representatives on security developments and the wider impact of the war on neighbouring countries.

The UN envoy is also expected to visit refugee camps hosting thousands of Sudanese civilians who fled the fighting, as humanitarian concerns continue to grow along Sudan’s borders.

The mission comes amid increasing international concern that the conflict, now entering its fourth year, is spreading instability across the region and placing additional pressure on neighbouring states.

Haavisto has been engaging with regional actors as part of efforts to prevent further military escalation and revive political dialogue aimed at achieving a lasting solution to the crisis.

Following his meetings in Chad, the UN envoy is expected to return to Sudan in the coming weeks for discussions with senior government officials.
