UK students visit Rwanda reintegration center to study ex-combatant rehabilitation

Musanze, Rwanda, March 29, 2026 - A group of 28 postgraduate students from SOAS University of London has visited the Mutobo Demobilization and Reintegration Centre in northern Rwanda to study the country’s approach to rehabilitating former armed group members. The visit focused on understanding how Rwanda receives and reintegrates former fighters from groups such as the FDLR, many of whom return from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after years in armed movements. The delegation was received by Jacques Nziza, Vice President of the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission, who outlined ongoing efforts to support ex-combatants in transitioning back into civilian life. Students also held discussions with former fighters, who shared testimonies about their experiences in the bush and their decision to return and reintegrate into Rwandan society. Professor Phil Clark, speaking on behalf of the group, praised the initiative, highlighting its role in promoting peace, reconciliation, and long-term stability in the Great Lakes region.
