Uganda Faces Scrutiny Over Planned Gaza Deployment
Kampala, August 12, 2026 - Uganda's planned participation in an international stabilisation force for Gaza has opened a domestic debate over how far the country should extend its security role beyond East Africa.
The proposed deployment is tied to a wider roadmap that would require Israel and Hamas to halt military operations in Gaza. Supporters present Uganda's role as consistent with its long-standing security cooperation with international partners and its record of contributing forces to regional and international missions.
Critics are urging caution, arguing that Uganda already carries substantial security commitments closer to home. The debate is therefore not only about Gaza, but also about the government's allocation of military, diplomatic and financial bandwidth while regional conflicts and domestic governance concerns remain unresolved.
The issue also places renewed attention on Uganda's foreign-policy positioning. Participation in such a mission could deepen international security partnerships, but it would also expose Kampala to scrutiny over mandate clarity, human rights obligations and the political risks of operating in one of the world's most contested conflict zones.
