Two Wazalendo Groups Clash for Control in Batakirwa, Local Chief Flees
Kinshasa, February 13, 2026 - The Batakirwa area of the Bafuna group (Wanianga sector) in Walikale territory, North Kivu, is facing a serious security crisis as two Wazalendo factions compete for control of the region.
Since February 11, the Uhuru RDC armed group, led by Mashite Kashira, has deployed fighters in the villages of Kilambo, Buringa, and Iseya, threatening clashes with NDC-Rénové fighters under Muissa Shimiray Guidon if they attempt to enter the area. Local sources report that Uhuru RDC claims exclusive control over this mineral-rich territory, denying other armed groups any operational presence.
Civilians are caught in the crossfire. The local chief, who received threats, was forced to flee to Walikale town. He reported that residents are regularly intimidated by Uhuru RDC fighters, accused of supporting their rivals, NDC-Rénové.
“The population is in grave danger. These armed men openly threaten civilians and equate them with their enemies,” declared Chief Kabaki.
The chief has issued an urgent appeal to military and administrative authorities to intervene swiftly and defuse tensions before the situation escalates further, risking additional loss of life.
