Two UN Peacekeepers Killed In South Sudan Ambush
Jonglei, August 24, 2026 - Two United Nations peacekeepers were killed and seven others injured after an ambush during a security operation in South Sudan's Jonglei region.
The UN Mission in South Sudan said unidentified gunmen attacked personnel traveling toward Pajut. The injured included three peacekeepers, two South Sudanese national police officers and two UN civilian staff.
The mission deployed a rapid response force to secure the area and coordinate relief efforts. UNMISS head Anita Kiki Gbeho condemned the attack and called for an immediate investigation, warning that violence against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes.
South Sudan continues to face ethnic conflict and fighting between government forces and armed groups. Rwanda has historically contributed personnel to UN and African Union peace operations, making instability in South Sudan relevant to wider African security burden-sharing.
