Two Tuareg Marabouts Executed After Arrest
Niamey, January 29, 2026 - Two Tuareg marabouts were summarily executed by Nigerien security forces following their arrest in the Niamey 2000 neighborhood. The victims, including Ahmad Ag Almouner Ag Madda, a respected elder from Tessit, Gao, were taken by military personnel in the morning and found dead by late afternoon.
No official charges were filed, and the fate of a third man arrested with them remains unknown. Their burial is scheduled for January 30 at Yantala cemetery.
Calls are growing for an independent investigation into these extrajudicial killings amid rising communal tensions.
