Traffic Resumes on Chivanga-Bulambika Road Despite Rebel Harassment

Kinshasa, February 15, 2026 - South Kivu - Road traffic resumed on Sunday, February 8, along the Chivanga-Kalonge-Bulambika-Hombo road in Kalehe territory, offering relief after months of paralysis caused by clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters.

Motorcycle taxi drivers are now transporting goods from Bukavu to Hombo, enabling a tentative resumption of commerce. However, users report harassment at rebel checkpoints:

AFC/M23 rebels at Chivanga are reportedly demanding 50,000 FC per motorcycle.

Wazalendo fighters at the entrance to Kahuzi-Biega National Park are imposing 30,000 FC per motorcyclist.

Locals warn that these roadblocks may drive up transportation costs, affecting the price of basic necessities. Motorcycle taxi drivers have urged the armed groups to dismantle the checkpoints, warning that continued harassment threatens the region’s economic recovery.

The Miti-Bulambika-Hombo axis had been closed for several months, leading to serious economic and social consequences for the population. Traffic resumption marks a step toward normalcy, but security and fair passage remain major concerns.
