Traders Looted on Route to Malimingi Mining Site

Kinshasa, February 16, 2026 - Maasha, Ikobo group, Walikale territory, North Kivu - A convoy of traders traveling from Lubero to the Malimingi mining site was attacked by unidentified armed men on Saturday, February 15, in Maasha.

According to administrative and security sources from the Wanianga sector, the assailants systematically looted the convoy, stealing money, cell phones, and merchandise. The victims, traumatized by the attack, were forced to return to Rusamambu. No fatalities were reported.

This incident highlights the ongoing insecurity in Walikale, where multiple armed groups operate and frequently target traders on strategic routes. A similar attack occurred in November 2025 along the same route.

Local traders and economic stakeholders are urging authorities to strengthen security measures to ensure safe passage to mining sites and protect the movement of people and goods.
