Timbuktu Region: Malian Army Officer Killed in Targeted Attack in Goundam

April 18-19, 2026 - A Malian army officer and two of his companions were killed in the town of Goundam, in the Timbuktu region, following an attack attributed to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). According to reports from the area and a claim of responsibility issued by the armed group, the victims were shot inside the town during the night. The officer held the rank of captain, and was reportedly targeted along with two individuals accompanying him. The attack is said to have occurred on the night of April 18 to 19, 2026. JNIM later confirmed its responsibility for the incident, describing it as a targeted operation against a military figure. Malian authorities have not yet released detailed public information regarding the circumstances of the attack or any subsequent security response in the area. The incident adds to a series of ongoing security challenges in northern Mali, where armed groups continue to carry out targeted assaults against military personnel and positions.
