Three Civilians Killed in Shooting in Bankoko Neighborhood
Bunia, April 14, 2026 - Three civilians were killed and another seriously injured in a shooting incident that occurred on Monday evening in the Bankoko neighborhood of Bunia, in Ituri province, raising renewed concern over security incidents involving armed personnel in urban areas.
According to local sources, the alleged perpetrator-suspected of being a member of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC)-opened fire during a domestic dispute in which he accused his partner of infidelity. The gunfire also struck nearby civilians, turning a private altercation into a deadly incident.
Witnesses reported that the victims included a woman, her partner, and a child estimated to be around ten years old. Another civilian sustained serious injuries and was evacuated to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
The incident has reignited public concern over the presence of armed individuals carrying weapons outside official duties in a city already marked by heightened security sensitivities. Residents expressed alarm over the recurrence of such cases, which they say undermine public confidence and safety.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by either military or local authorities regarding the circumstances of the shooting or the identity of the suspected shooter.
