Tanzania Commits to Strengthening Regional Security Cooperation

Dodoma, April 11, 2026 - The Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania have agreed to reinforce bilateral military cooperation and deepen regional security dialogue, following high-level talks between defense officials in the Tanzanian capital.

The discussions were led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense and Veterans Affairs Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita, who was received by Tanzania’s Minister of Defense and National Service Rhimo Nyansaho. The meeting focused on defense cooperation, border security, and broader regional security coordination.

According to the Congolese Ministry of Defense, the visit aligns with directives from President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen military partnerships, support armed forces reform, and promote stability in the region.

Both delegations emphasized the importance of maintaining regular and structured consultations between their respective defense institutions, particularly in light of persistent security challenges in the Great Lakes region.

Congolese officials stressed the need for continuous dialogue to prevent incidents, harmonize security approaches, and reinforce mutual trust between neighboring states. Tanzanian authorities, for their part, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting peace and stability efforts in the DRC.

The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as military training, capacity building, coordination of peace initiatives, and operational support.

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania maintain longstanding diplomatic and defense relations, with Tanzania contributing troops to regional and United Nations peacekeeping missions, including deployments under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) framework.

The engagement comes in a broader regional context marked by ongoing instability in eastern DRC, where foreign and regional forces have previously suffered casualties during operations against armed groups, including the AFC/M23 rebellion.
