Sudan Suspends Private Broadcaster Sudania 24 Over Alleged Hate Speech

Sudan, April 8, 2026 - Sudan’s Ministry of Information has suspended the private television channel Sudania 24 and revoked its operating licenses, accusing it of professional misconduct and incitement of tribal tensions.

The broadcaster, owned by businessman Wajdi Mirghani, has been operating from outside Sudan since the outbreak of war in April 2023 forced the closure of its Khartoum headquarters. It has primarily continued its reporting through digital platforms and social media.

According to a ministry statement, the suspension followed recent coverage of a protest in the Dalgo locality of Northern State. The channel had aired footage showing local residents opposing the presence of displaced people from Darfur, which authorities said contributed to the spread of hate speech and regional division.

The ministry further ordered the suspension of work permits for the channel’s correspondents until all licenses are renewed and editorial compliance commitments are made.

Sudania 24 has previously faced government restrictions. In December 2024, it was forced to cancel its “Circle of Events” program after hosting opposition figures accused of insulting the military.

Officials said they are working with the Ministry of Telecommunications to block the specific content cited in the violation. They also emphasized that the government does not hold ownership in the channel and is not responsible for its editorial output.

Authorities justified the decision as necessary to protect national unity and social stability, noting that the broadcaster currently operates without an authorized studio inside the country.
