Sudan Seeks Deeper Military Cooperation With Turkey
Ankara, August 17, 2026 - Sudanese Sovereign Council member and senior military commander Yasser al-Atta held defence talks in Ankara, underscoring the Sudanese army's reliance on Turkish military technology in its war against the Rapid Support Forces.
Al-Atta met Turkey's chief of the General Staff, General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, after an official welcoming ceremony. Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler also joined talks with both military officials during the visit.
The Sudanese Armed Forces have made extensive use of Turkish-made equipment, particularly Bayraktar and Akinci drones, as the conflict with the RSF continues. Sudanese authorities did not issue a detailed public account of the discussions.
The visit reflects the growing security dimension of Sudan-Turkey ties, which already include cooperation agreements covering trade, investment, transport, agriculture and reconstruction.
