Sudan’s Democratic Block Adopts New Statutes, Discusses Democratic Transition

Port Sudan, April 26, 2026 - Sudan’s Democratic Block alliance has adopted new internal statutes and held discussions on the country’s path toward democratic transition during a two-day organizational meeting in Port Sudan.

The meeting, held under the theme “A National Vision That Prioritizes Peace and Restores Stability,” brought together more than 19 political and armed groups aligned within the Forces for Freedom and Change - Democratic Block (FFC-DB).

A senior member of the Sovereign Council and leading figure in the alliance said discussions focused on shaping a roadmap for democratic transition while maintaining unity among political actors in the face of ongoing conflict. He emphasized the need to prioritize national interests and strengthen internal cohesion.

Participants described the current situation as a critical moment for the country, calling for a shift away from entrenched political approaches in order to address evolving challenges and plan for long-term stability.

The Democratic Block, formed in 2021 following a split within the broader Forces for Freedom and Change coalition, includes groups that later supported the military’s measures in October of that year.

During the meeting, member organizations formally endorsed the alliance’s new statutes, which leaders said aim to strengthen coordination and provide a unified political framework. Officials described the move as a step toward rebuilding state institutions and consolidating a common national vision.

The gathering included a wide range of political figures, armed movement leaders, and representatives of civil society, as well as delegates from displaced and refugee communities and groups from eastern Sudan.

Organizers said the adoption of the statutes reflects an effort to overcome fragmentation within the political landscape and establish a more cohesive front to address governance challenges and advance stability.
