Sudan, Libya Military Officials Hold Talks on Security Cooperation in Tripoli

The discussions brought together representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Libya’s internationally recognized government based in Tripoli, which controls large parts of western and southern Libya. According to a statement from the Libyan General Staff, Lieutenant General Salahuddin al-Namroush met with Sudan’s Director of Military Intelligence, Lieutenant General Mohamed Ali Sabir, to explore avenues for expanding bilateral military cooperation. The meeting focused on enhancing coordination in security matters, with both sides emphasizing the importance of closer collaboration to address shared regional challenges. Libyan officials highlighted the longstanding ties between Sudan and Libya, noting that strengthened cooperation would contribute to broader regional stability. The two sides also agreed to expand joint training programs and increase the exchange of military expertise to improve operational readiness. The talks come amid ongoing tensions involving eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar, whom Sudanese authorities have accused of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudanese officials allege that weapons have been transferred through eastern Libya and that RSF elements have received logistical and training support at bases under Haftar’s control, including facilities in southern Libya. In June 2025, the Sudanese army also accused Haftar-aligned forces of participating alongside RSF fighters in an attack on a border area in Sudan’s Northern State. The latest engagement in Tripoli reflects ongoing efforts by Sudan’s military leadership to reinforce regional alliances while addressing cross-border security concerns linked to the conflict.
