South Kivu: Two New Commanders Take Office in 33rd Military Region
Uvira, October 27, 2025 - Brigadier General Jean-Jacques Ilunga Kabamba assumed command of the 33rd military region in Uvira, while General Amuli Civiri was appointed commander of the Sokola 2 operational sector in South Kivu.
The officers arrived through the Kavimvira gate on the Burundi border, succeeding General Mwehu Lumbu Evariste and following the death of General Mwaku Mbuluku Jean-Daniel in August. Their appointments come amid a tense security environment, including the occupation of Bukavu by the AFC-M23 movement in February 2025 and violent protests linked to prior military postings.
The installation of these experienced commanders aims to strengthen military operations and stabilize the region, with their official inauguration attended by members of the general staff of the 33rd military region and the Sokola 2 sector. Analysts say the appointments signal a renewed focus on security and operational efficiency in this strategic area.
