South Kivu: Renewed Clashes Between M23 and Wazalendo in Kabare

By Sarah Ndaya2 min readFrançais

On Thursday, November 13, 2025, fighting erupted between M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters, members of the AVAFAC militia, in the Kabare territory of South Kivu, particularly in the localities of Mutshshemi, Kabukungu, Mucheni, and Kabulungu.

The clashes caused panic and population displacement, with exchanges of heavy and light weapons fire lasting nearly three hours. Civil society condemned what it called a flagrant violation of the Doha ceasefire agreement, accusing the M23 of conducting a belligerent campaign near Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

These incidents occurred while peace talks were ongoing in Washington, prompting civil society to call on national authorities and international partners to intervene urgently to prevent an escalation of the conflict in eastern DRC.
