South Kivu: FARDC launches counter-offensive to retake Nzibira
Kinshasa, October 3, 2025 - The Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), supported by the Wazalendo militias, launched a counter-offensive on Tuesday 29 September 2025 to regain control of Nzibira, a strategic town in the Walungu territory recently occupied by AFC-M23 rebels. Fighting is concentrated around the Mulunga, Chirwa, Nyamarhege, Mulamba and Kaniola mountains, where the army is also using targeted drone strikes.
Despite rebel resistance, the AFC-M23's advance towards other mining areas, such as Mwenga-Centre and Kamituga, is being slowed by defensive positions established by the FARDC and Wazalendo in Culwe, Lubimbe and Ngando, located about 20 km from the occupied areas.
