South Kivu: Clashes Between AFC-M23 and Wazalendo Paralyse Nyangezi
Nyangezi, South Kivu, DRC - Violent clashes between AFC-M23 rebels and Wazalendo self-defense groups on 21-22 October 2025 have plunged the Nyangezi region of Walungu territory into a severe security crisis.
The localities of Irhaga, Bwenda, Chiyanja, and Businga were hit by heavy gunfire from both heavy and light weapons, forcing the partial closure of schools, including the Weza School Complex, and halting economic activity in the area.
Thousands of residents fled to Bukavu, while the Nyangezi-Kamanyola road remains closed, hampering humanitarian aid deliveries. The clashes follow earlier attacks by AFC-M23 on Wazalendo positions in Mazigiro, Kamisimbi, underscoring the urgent need for intervention by authorities and humanitarian organizations to protect civilians and stabilize the region.
