South Kivu: Bukavu-Bunyakiri Road Closure Halts Vaccine Distribution
Kinshasa, December 14, 2025 - South Kivu - December 2025 - Health zones in Kalonge, Bunyakiri, and Bulungu are experiencing a shortage of polio vaccines due to the closure of the Bukavu-Bunyakiri road, which has been blocked for nearly 30 days amid ongoing clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and the FARDC.
The road closure has made it impossible for vehicles to deliver vaccine doses, leaving thousands of children without immunization. Local medical authorities warn that the disruption is also causing food shortages, further worsening the health and nutritional vulnerability of the population.
Health officials are calling on both armed parties to allow safe passage for civilians and humanitarian aid, emphasizing the urgent need to prevent a growing public health crisis.
