Sexual Violence Used as Weapon of War by Armed Groups

Eastern DRC, January 14, 2026 - A recent report reveals that sexual violence is being systematically employed as a weapon of war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The violence has been committed by members of at least five non-state armed groups, including the AFC/M23, as well as by soldiers of the Congolese army.

According to the report, survivors of these crimes face a climate of impunity and a health system insufficiently equipped to provide support. Investigations conducted in November 2025 included interviews with 23 survivors in northeastern DRC and four refugees in Uganda.

Authorities and humanitarian actors, including provincial health and justice officials, were consulted, but responses from responsible parties, including the Congolese government and leaders of the M23, were reportedly absent.

The findings underscore the urgent need for accountability, protection of civilians, and support for survivors amid ongoing conflict in the region.
