Several Civilians Killed and Village Burned in Major ADF Attack in Babesua
Mambasa, March 17, 2026 - Islamist militants from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out a deadly attack on the evening of March 16 in Babesua, a village 12 kilometers from Badengaido, in Ituri province. At least ten civilians were killed, and numerous homes and vehicles were burned.
Journalists on the scene reported unbearable images of bodies lying on the ground and the village completely destroyed. The attack also targeted rangers of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (RFO), some of whom sought refuge inside the forest.
The New Congolese Civil Society has called on authorities to resume joint FARDC-UPDF operations in the area, citing the vast territory of Mambasa (covering 54% of Ituri) and the limited presence of soldiers.
This attack comes days after another ADF assault on the Muchacha and Mavuvu mining sites on the night of March 11-12, which killed at least 17 people. The Islamic State claimed responsibility, releasing images showing burning trucks, tractors, and camps.
The Muchacha region connects to Badengaido, Niania, and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, forming part of the Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor, a strategic route supplying Kisangani and Kinshasa with essential agricultural products.
