Security Forces Kill Suspected SPLA-IO Fighter In West Nile Operation
Koboko, August 6, 2026 - Ugandan security forces have intensified intelligence-led operations in West Nile after a series of shooting-related murders in the sub-region, including an incident involving a suspected member of South Sudan's opposition SPLA-IO.
The suspect, identified as Moses Acio, was killed during a security operation after allegedly shooting dead a woman at Lobule Refugee Settlement in Koboko District. Police coordinated with the Uganda People's Defence Forces after receiving information about the killing.
Security personnel intercepted Acio along the Yumbe-Koboko Road, where he allegedly opened fire on the team and was shot dead. The incident places renewed attention on the security management of Uganda's northwestern border districts, which host refugee communities and sit close to South Sudan's conflict dynamics.
For investors and operators with exposure to logistics, trade corridors and humanitarian supply chains in West Nile, the case underscores the importance of monitoring cross-border armed actor risks, even when incidents are handled as targeted security operations rather than broad unrest.
