Rwandan Peacekeepers in South Sudan Receive UN Medals of Commendation
Kigali, March 8, 2026 - Rwandan peacekeepers (Rwanbatt-1) serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded UN medals on March 3, 2026, in recognition of their contribution to peacekeeping operations.
The ceremony took place at UNMISS Tomping headquarters in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and was led by Major General Robert Yaw Affram, Deputy Force Commander of UNMISS, who described the medals as a symbol of professionalism, dedication, and commitment to duty.
“The UN Medal you received today reflects professionalism, good conduct, dedication, and courage in challenging conditions. It is earned through days of hard work, nights on guard duty, and steadfast commitment to peacekeeping,” Maj Gen Affram said.
He also commended the Government of Rwanda and the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) for continuously deploying soldiers of competence and professionalism to the UNMISS mission.
Lt Col Paul Ndushabandi, Commander of Rwanbatt-1, praised his unit for their dedication, perseverance, and courage over ten months of service, encouraging them to maintain this commitment for the remainder of the mission.
The ceremony featured military parades and cultural performances, including traditional Rwandan dances, celebrating the peacekeepers’ achievements and their role in protecting humanity.
