Rwandan and Tanzanian armies hold 15th border security meeting

Kigali, April 4, 2026 - Karagwe District, Tanzania, March 25, 2026 - Military leaders from Rwanda and Tanzania have convened for the 15th Border Military Leaders Meeting, aimed at addressing border security challenges and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The three-day meeting, which began on March 24 and runs through March 26, brings together units operating along the shared border, including Rwanda’s 5th Division and Tanzania’s 202nd Brigade.

The Rwandan delegation is led by Maj. Gen. Ruki Karusisi, commander of the 5th Division of the Rwanda Defence Force, while the Tanzanian side is headed by Brig. Gen. Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, commander of the 202nd Brigade of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force.

The talks focus on enhancing coordination in tackling cross-border crime, with both sides emphasizing the importance of intelligence sharing and sustained collaboration.

Rwanda and Tanzania have maintained longstanding military and security cooperation, particularly along their common border, where joint efforts have helped address security threats and improve stability.

Beyond security, the two countries share strong economic ties. Tanzania remains a key trade partner for Rwanda, notably through the port of Dar es Salaam, which serves as a major gateway for imports.

A significant share of Rwanda’s petroleum products transits through Tanzania, with an estimated 60 million liters imported monthly. The accessibility and logistical advantages of Dar es Salaam have made it a preferred route compared to alternative corridors.

Trade between the two nations continues to grow, with Rwanda importing goods worth over $228 million from Tanzania as of late 2023.

The two countries have also expanded cooperation into other sectors, including agriculture, following a bilateral agreement signed in November 2025 aimed at boosting joint development initiatives.
