Rwanda Welcomes Over 500 Returnees from the DRC

Kigali, November 25, 2025 - Rwanda has welcomed 511 Rwandans from 153 families who had been held hostage by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The returnees crossed through the La Corniche border, the main entry point connecting Rwanda and the DRC, and were received with vehicles to transport them to the Nyarushishi Center in Rusizi District for temporary accommodation and orientation.

The group included 127 women, 32 men, and 352 children, who had previously been living in the Goma temporary camp after fleeing various areas in eastern DRC. These Rwandans represent survivors who were forcibly displaced following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Deputy Mayor of Rubavu District in charge of Economic Development, Nzabonimpa Deogratias, welcomed the returnees and emphasized the support programs in place to reintegrate them into society.

“They will be provided with basic necessities that will help them earn a living and serve the country. This support is part of Rwanda’s comprehensive strategy to integrate returnees into their communities. They will also be assisted to participate in community projects so they can provide for their families,” Nzabonimpa said.

He further highlighted that the increasing number of returnees reflects the effectiveness of ongoing mobilization campaigns, noting that both family members and peers of those still in the DRC are actively encouraging voluntary return.

Each returnee will receive financial support and essential supplies to facilitate their reintegration:

Adults (over 18 years old): $188 each

Children (under 18 years old): $113 each

Food assistance: valued at 45,000 Rwf per person

The Rwandan government, in coordination with local authorities and humanitarian agencies, continues to implement programs that ensure the safe and dignified return of Rwandans from the DRC, offering them opportunities to rebuild their lives and contribute to the country’s development.
