Rwanda Records 130 Deaths and 1,800 Houses Destroyed in 2025 Disasters

Kigali, December 5, 2025 - The Rwandan Police announced that while the overall security situation in Rwanda remained stable in 2025, the country faced several disasters that claimed 130 lives and destroyed 1,800 houses. The announcement was made during a press conference with the Rwandan Investigation Bureau (RIB).

The Director General of Public Security and Public Order, CP G. Rumanzi, revealed that over 230 fires occurred across the country this year, with police actively intervening to extinguish them.

"Disasters killed 130 people nationwide, including those struck by lightning, victims of landmines, landslides, and floods," said CP Rumanzi. He added that 1,100 hectares of crops were damaged and over 100 livestock perished due to these incidents.

On a positive note, traffic accidents decreased by 2.4% compared to the previous year. CP Rumanzi attributed accidents to unsafe driving behaviors, including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Rwanda National Police continues to implement the “Turindane Tugereyo Amashoro” campaign, aiming to further reduce road accidents and enhance public safety.
